		<description>

AboutWee Jia Foong (Foong) is a media artist, educator, and technology enthusiast based in Kuala Lumpur. Working across installations, audiovisual media, and performance, his practice moves between personal studio work and technical production. Alongside developing his own audiovisual practice, he is often engaged as a technologist, designing systems and infrastructure for immersive and interactive environments, as well as supporting show and performance systems across different contexts. 

Foong works fluidly between solo studio practice and collaboration with practitioners across art, film, music, theatre, and technology. Outside of his practice, he loves exploring new tools, gear, and playful technologies—testing and reworking them into creative audiovisual expressions. He enjoys teaching and organising workshops on technology, including topics such as TouchDesigner.His current focus is on TEKKA, an audiovisual festival dedicated to art, music, and technology.

2023
	Psychosynthesis is a full-length contemporary dance production which collaborates closely with technology, placing science and multimedia central in the process of creating movement, generating multimedia images, theatrical lights and setting design. This production is a visual and kinaesthetic portrayal of the initial scientific discovery of the virus, community adaptation in the height of the global pandemic and interrogates the psychological and sociological consequences of prolonged periods of isolation. Most importantly the dance explores a hopeful resolve where ultimately the will of humanity triumphs over the struggles and hardships faced. Slowly, but surely, the world returns to a sense of normalcy albeit changed.

Through the lens of fire is part of 
Sensorium of Inversion/Immersion (SENSORii).


The Promethean myth serves as a powerful metaphor for humanity's relationship with technology. Philosopher Bernard Stiegler draws upon this narrative to explore the prosthetic nature of technology, emphasizing its role as an extension of human capability and a central element in the continuous process of becoming human
Loosely informed by Stiegler’s work, the work explores the mediated representation of reality through technological processes and interrogates their role in shaping cultural narratives and histories. Rather than striving for the hyperrealism traditionally sought by modern computer graphics and capture technologies, it embraces abstraction and deconstruction. Visual material is sourced from diverse origins and subjected to processes that reveal its underlying structures. Errors, imperfections, algorithmic artifacts, and digital noise are embraced, exaggerated, and interwoven into the image-making process.


By revealing the mechanics and materiality of the digital, this approach challenges conventional notions of seamless representation, offering instead an alternative aesthetic rooted in the artifice and complexity of technological mediation. The work invites viewers to reconsider their engagement with images and their role as cultural inscriptions, revealing technology not as a transparent medium but as an active participant in the construction of meaning.

Before Wake

	"Before Wake" is a depiction of a young adult asleep on the bed just before dawn breaks. She is loosely tucked under the blanket, deep within dreams as she sleeps on her side, with the lights left on as a result of her exhaustion from work.

The work is a response to an instinctive inner fascination towards the aesthetic qualities of traditional impressionist paintings and abstract image making, drawing its parallels with the abstract yet informatic nature of the images from modern era digital imaging equipment, such as Xray, Lidar, RGB waveforms, Vectorscopes, etc. At its subconscious core, it is a search for a digital aesthetic language that emulates and pays homages to the visually evoking qualities of traditional impressionist textures and abstract brush strokes. In practice, the work is an aesthetic exploration into digital image composition using digital tools, image processing methodologies, manipulation algorithms and processes in hopes to unveil its inner poetics. 

The image is composed by first capturing digital photographs of the subject matter from various different angles using a digital camera. The photographs were then brought into a photogrammetry software to be processed into 3D spatial data. The software analyses and compares all the acquired photographs to determine its camera positions relative to one another, which will then be used to estimate the three-dimensional coordinates of all of the points in the scene using triangulation algorithms. The resulting product of this process is a set of data points in digital space that very closely resembles and represents the actual scenery in the form of a point cloud. The point cloud data is then further manipulated and abstracted using various digital methods and techniques, which will eventually be reprojected to compose the final work.

The work probes into the representation reality via the digital lens and its practices. In contrast to the representations of a realistic immediate reality as pursued by modern computer graphics and digital capture devices, an abstracted approach has been adopted. Errors in data capture, imperfections, image manipulation algorithms and digital noise, are not obscured but rather exaggerated, amplified and integrated into the image making process, revealing its inner artifices and clockwork while suggest an alternative form of charm and appreciation.

Operasi Cassava is a series of projects derived from examining Malaysia’s cultural identity
through our agricultural and dietary habits regarding the Cassava Plant. The project was
originally initiated by artist Lim Kok Yoong and since then has welcomed reinterpretations and
collaborations with other artists.


The project attempts to look into the social agricultural significance of tapioca and its contribution to various collective narratives throughout its migratory process. “When Yuca Sleeps” is the 5th rendition of the project. As an Homage, the current interpretation takes form as a light installation allured by
the lightscape of contemporary urban farming culture with the support of artist Lim Kok Yoong

and INXO Arts Fund.

Acting like a digital reservoir - Yuca is a pulsing rhizomatic form resembling a digital plant of
memories made of steel and lights . Yuca attempts to be an object of emphathetic presence
that has a symbiotic relationship with the humans around it. Yuca can exist by itself as a recreational light installtion but also enjoys collecting the thoughts of the people around it.

"Ensemble" is a assemblage consist of 3 works from artist Wee Jia Foong, Yu Kah Man and Joanne Yee. Pulsing alpha 003 is one of the works that makes up the asssemblage. Ensemble actively seeks to involve the audience in the
interplay of light and sound to create a harmonized audio-visual experience through tactile manipulation. Although constructed mainly from mundane objects such as light bulbs and
strings, the use of technology allows the audience to trigger the various components of the
installation to create a collaborative piece which stimulates the human sensory experience as
well as consequently exploring unorthodox uses of these everyday objects. This emphasizes
the role of the audience not just as a spectator but also as another instrument in creating
poetry between light, sound and motion.
